The Calendarium Naturale Magicum Perpetuum is one of those objects that can change the way the history of Western esotericism looks. At first glance it resembles an impossibly dense wall chart: rows of Latin words, planetary signs, Hebrew letters, geometrical figures, divine names, angels, metals, elements, zodiacal symbols, sacred numbers, human faculties, biblical figures, and small narrative images all packed into a single monumental design. It is frequently called the “Magical Calendar,” but that modern shorthand can mislead. The work is not primarily a calendar in the ordinary sense of a list of days. It is closer to a visual encyclopedia of correspondences—a printed attempt to place nature, number, religion, astrology, alchemy, and learned magic inside one ordered cosmos.
That ambition makes the sheet historically valuable. It shows what happens when the classificatory habits of Renaissance occult philosophy are transformed into information design. Instead of reading several books and assembling their analogies mentally, a viewer could look across a vast engraved surface and compare relationships at a glance. One could move from the number seven to the planets, from planets to metals and spirits, from the zodiac to months and bodily associations, or from Christian theological concepts to Kabbalistic letter symbolism. The chart therefore offers a rare view of esotericism not simply as ritual practice but as a technology of organizing knowledge.
The object is also surrounded by problems that reward careful investigation. Its exact print date has been debated. Its names implicate Johann Baptist Großschedel von Aicha, the publisher Johann Theodor de Bry, the engraver Matthäus Merian the Elder, and the famous Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe in different ways. Some of its material clearly echoes Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, while other portions draw from the Arbatel, Christian Kabbalistic traditions, astrological handbooks, and early modern magical compilations. Untangling these layers reveals a network rather than a solitary “author.”

What the “Magical Calendar” Actually Is
Institutional catalogues describe the surviving object as a large engraved broadside assembled from multiple sheets. The Wellcome Collection records a copy under Johann Baptist Grossschedel and gives it a tentative date around 1620, with Johann Theodor de Bry as publisher. The virtual exhibition of Goethe University Frankfurt, drawing on more recent scholarship, places the print more narrowly between 1616 and 1618 and identifies Matthäus Merian the Elder as the artist who transferred Großschedel’s conception into the engraved composition. A WorldCat record, likewise informed by scholarship on the manuscript evidence, uses 1618.
The disagreement is not a minor bibliographical nuisance. It illustrates a basic rule for studying esoteric texts and images: the date printed or traditionally attached to a work is not always the same thing as the date of composition, the date of a surviving manuscript, or the date of publication. In this case, those stages matter because the wall chart evolved out of manuscript material before appearing as a finished print.
The title announces the work’s scale of ambition. Calendarium naturale magicum perpetuum may be rendered approximately as a “perpetual natural-magical calendar.” Its longer title promises contemplation of the deepest secrets of things and knowledge of philosophy. That language belongs to an early modern intellectual world in which “natural magic” could be presented not merely as spell-craft but as a learned inquiry into hidden qualities, cosmic sympathies, mathematical ratios, celestial influences, and divine order.
Calling it a calendar nevertheless makes sense in one respect. Calendars are devices for imposing structure on recurring time. This sheet extends that instinct far beyond months and days. It organizes the world itself through repeated numerical, celestial, and theological patterns. Its “perpetuity” is therefore conceptual as much as chronological: the order it claims to display is meant to be enduring because it is grounded in the structure of creation.
The Manuscript Clue That Changed the Dating
A major advance in understanding the print came from the work of historian Carlos Gilly, who identified British Library Harley MS 3420 as a manuscript by Großschedel dated 1614 and connected it directly to the later engraved chart. The Frankfurt University exhibition summarizes Gilly’s finding and points to an especially revealing note from 1618 in which Großschedel complained that de Bry had caused the print to be made without his knowledge. If that note refers to the engraved object, 1618 becomes a latest plausible point for its production rather than a vague date somewhere around 1620.
Other visual evidence supports a date after 1616. The Frankfurt researchers note similarities between figures of Adam and Eve on the chart and imagery associated with Merian’s treatment of the Basel Dance of Death, an engraving connected with 1616. They also observe that Merian’s collaboration with de Bry is not documented before that year. Together, the manuscript note and the artistic comparisons make a window of roughly 1616–1618 particularly persuasive, while institutional records that say “1620?” preserve the older uncertainty responsibly rather than pretending the problem is closed.
This is a useful example of how historians work with occult artifacts. A dramatic title or later legend may attract attention, but attribution becomes stronger when several kinds of evidence converge: handwriting, ownership, notes inside manuscripts, print history, stylistic comparison, publisher networks, and surviving physical copies. The most interesting conclusion is not simply “the correct year.” It is that the Magical Calendar passed through distinct material states—a private or semi-private manuscript conception and a large public-facing engraved version—and that the transition may have involved conflict over authorization.
Großschedel, de Bry, Merian, and the Tycho Brahe Puzzle
The lower portion of the print gives several names, but they do not all mean the same thing. Johann Baptist Großschedel von Aicha is identified with authorship or conception. Johann Theodor de Bry appears as the publisher responsible for issuing the work. Matthäus Merian the Elder is associated by modern scholarship with the engraving and visual transfer. Tycho Brahe appears with the striking formula inventor 1582.
That last phrase has caused confusion because Tycho Brahe is one of the most famous astronomers of the sixteenth century. It is tempting to assume that he authored the Magical Calendar or created its occult system. The surviving evidence does not justify that simple conclusion. Goethe University Frankfurt cautiously suggests that Merian may have oriented himself toward an earlier conception or drawing associated with Brahe, while the print’s own word inventor can indicate a source of design or invention rather than the author of the final artifact. WorldCat distinguishes Merian as etcher and Großschedel as author while still listing Brahe as a contributor.
The date 1582 attached to Brahe is earlier than Großschedel’s 1614 manuscript. That chronological gap makes the attribution intriguing, not self-explanatory. Brahe’s intellectual world certainly included astrology as well as mathematical astronomy, and Renaissance astronomy had not yet been separated from astrological practice in the way modern disciplinary boundaries encourage us to imagine. Yet there is a difference between acknowledging that context and attributing every magical table on the later chart to Brahe. The safest historical reading is that the sheet claims a Brahean precedent while the surviving form belongs to Großschedel’s seventeenth-century compilation and the de Bry–Merian print environment.

Johann Theodor de Bry’s role also matters because his publishing house participated in a remarkable visual culture of learned esotericism. Around the same period, the de Bry circle published elaborate works by figures such as Robert Fludd and Michael Maier. Merian’s imagery for alchemical and cosmological books demonstrates how engraving could serve as a medium for arguments that were difficult to communicate through prose alone. The Magical Calendar belongs to this world of ambitious visual synthesis.
A Calendar That Functions as a Map of Knowledge
The chart is divided through numerical architecture. Goethe University Frankfurt describes twelve principal rows whose contents are organized according to the number assigned to each row. The first concerns unity; the second, duality; the third, triadic structures; and the sequence continues until the twelfth gathers phenomena naturally or conventionally grouped in twelves, such as zodiacal signs and months.
This arrangement is fundamental. Without it, the print can look like an accumulation of disconnected occult curiosities. With it, one can see the design principle: number acts as a filing system for reality. A concept belongs in a row because it participates in a numerical pattern. Two accommodates paired oppositions or complements. Three gathers triads. Four can connect fourfold systems. Seven can gather the classical planets and the large family of correspondences attached to them. Twelve provides a home for the zodiac and calendrical cycles.
The result resembles what we might now call a relational database, although the historical assumptions are entirely different. Modern databases connect records because designers assign fields and keys. The Magical Calendar connects objects because early modern occult philosophy imagined numbers and correspondences as meaningful features of reality itself. The chart is not only a storage device; it makes an ontological claim. Its organization says that things belong together because creation has an intelligible order.
That difference is important. A modern reader can appreciate the ingenuity of the information design without accepting the metaphysical or astrological premises. The numerical and graphic structures are historical evidence for how some early modern thinkers sought coherence across disciplines now separated into theology, medicine, mathematics, astronomy, linguistics, natural philosophy, and ritual studies.
Agrippa’s Numerical Scales: The Strongest Intellectual Backbone
The most obvious major predecessor is Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa’s De occulta philosophia libri tres, the Three Books of Occult Philosophy. The Library of Congress preserves a digitized 1533 edition, an illustrated folio containing astronomical signs, figures, alphabets, and what its catalogue calls cabalistic characters. Agrippa’s second book devotes a remarkable series of chapters to the “scales” of numbers, progressing from unity upward through a sequence that reaches twelve. The resemblance to the Magical Calendar’s arrangement is structural, not incidental.
Agrippa’s numerical chapters are themselves part of a larger cosmological program. Book One treats the elemental and natural world; Book Two turns to mathematics, celestial relationships, number, music, geometry, astrological images, and planetary structures; Book Three moves toward divine names, angels, religion, and ceremonial questions. This three-level architecture gave later occultists a powerful way to imagine correspondences as bridges between matter, heavens, and intellect.
When the Magical Calendar extracts or adapts Agrippan material, it does something visually innovative. Agrippa explains associations sequentially in a book. A reader turns pages and reconstructs the system through memory or notes. The chart compresses that process. It places parallel structures on the same surface so that relationships can be scanned horizontally and vertically.

This compression also changes how authority functions. In a prose argument, an author can explain why a particular association should be accepted, cite predecessors, qualify uncertainties, or distinguish analogy from causation. A table has less room for hesitation. Once several items occupy the same row, the graphic design makes them appear mutually confirming. Visual proximity becomes a form of persuasion.
One: Unity as Theology, Cosmos, and Alchemy
The first row, as explained by the Frankfurt exhibition, links unity with God, the world soul, the philosophers’ stone, and the unity of the world. The combination reveals how the chart crosses domains. Theology provides a supreme One. Philosophy provides the unity underlying multiplicity. Alchemy supplies the imagined perfection of the lapis philosophorum. These are not identical ideas, but numerical analogy allows them to inhabit the same symbolic level.
For a historian, this is more revealing than asking whether the stone “really” possessed supernatural qualities. The row demonstrates a method of thinking in which number becomes an interpretive grammar. One does not merely count objects; unity itself has philosophical significance. The same number can therefore connect divine, cosmological, and alchemical concepts.
Two: Polarity, Complementarity, and Generation
The second row gathers paired phenomena. Frankfurt highlights Adam and Eve, Sun and Moon, and form and matter. The associated conceptual emphasis is on conjunction and generative union. Such pairs could be understood as opposites, complements, or mutually necessary principles.
This is a familiar feature of alchemical symbolism, where solar and lunar imagery frequently provides a language for conjunction. Yet the calendar’s pairings should not be reduced to a single universal “male/female energy” theory. Early modern sources use gendered, Aristotelian, biblical, astrological, and alchemical models in historically specific ways. Modern symbolic readings may find psychological meaning in polarity, but that interpretation should be kept distinct from what the seventeenth-century compiler was doing.
Three and Beyond: From Trinity to Cosmic Taxonomy
The third row naturally includes the Christian Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—because Großschedel’s framework is unmistakably Christian. Later numerical scales gather structures such as elements, senses, planets, and zodiacal divisions according to their conventional numbers. The chart thus turns numerical recurrence into evidence of harmony.
From a modern scientific standpoint, seeing the same number in several systems does not demonstrate a causal relationship between them. Seven visible classical planets and seven days of the week, for example, have a historical relationship mediated by ancient astronomy and calendrical convention, while other sevenfold lists may have been constructed under the prestige of the number. The Magical Calendar often treats such repetitions as parts of a deeper pattern. Understanding that assumption is essential to understanding its worldview.
The Sevenfold World: Planets, Metals, Days, Spirits, and Magic Squares
The number seven became one of the richest organizing centers of learned Western magic because the premodern cosmos recognized seven “planets” moving against the fixed stars: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, and Moon. The modern astronomical categories differ—the Sun is a star and the Moon a natural satellite—but historical astrology used “planet” in the older sense of wandering celestial lights.
Each planet accumulated layers of association. Days of the week, metals, colors, temperaments, plants, animals, occupations, bodily correspondences, angels, and images could be assigned to planetary families. Agrippa systematized many of these relationships, and the Magical Calendar places them into an even more compact visual field.
Planetary magic squares are part of this tradition. A magic square is a real mathematical arrangement in which numbers are positioned so that rows, columns, and often diagonals produce equal sums. Agrippa assigned squares of increasing order to the seven planets, beginning with Saturn and continuing through the Moon. The mathematics is demonstrable; the claim that a numerical square mediates a planet’s occult power belongs to historical magical belief and is not established by modern science.
This distinction is worth emphasizing because early modern occultism often combines measurable structure with metaphysical interpretation. A numerical pattern may be mathematically valid while the celestial efficacy attributed to it remains a belief. Treating both parts carefully produces a more interesting history than either credulous acceptance or casual dismissal.
Christian Kabbalah and the Sacred Power of Letters
Hebrew letters and divine names appear prominently in the visual language of Renaissance ceremonial magic. To understand why, it is necessary to distinguish Jewish Kabbalah from Christian Kabbalah. Jewish Kabbalah developed within Jewish religious, exegetical, mystical, and communal contexts. Renaissance Christian scholars encountered Jewish texts and Hebrew learning, then reinterpreted selected elements through Christian theological claims.
Johannes Reuchlin was one of the major Christian Hebraists involved in this process. His De Verbo Mirifico, printed in Basel in 1494 and preserved digitally by the University Library of Freiburg, belongs to the intellectual prehistory of later Christian Kabbalistic speculation. Reuchlin and other Christian interpreters treated Hebrew letters and divine names as keys to sacred wisdom while frequently redirecting Jewish materials toward Christian conclusions.
The Magical Calendar inherits that environment. Hebrew does not appear merely as another language. Letters can function simultaneously as alphabetic signs, numerical values, divine-name components, and visual symbols. In such a system, writing seems to connect linguistic and cosmic order.
Modern readers should resist two opposite simplifications. One is to imagine that the chart faithfully reproduces a timeless “Kabbalah” shared unchanged by all esoteric traditions. It does not. The other is to dismiss the Hebrew material as decorative exoticism. In fact, Christian Kabbalah was intellectually significant in Renaissance esoteric culture precisely because its practitioners believed Hebrew preserved exceptional access to revelation. The historical task is to trace appropriation, transformation, and theological reinterpretation without confusing the Christian product with its Jewish sources.
The Pentagrammaton and Christian Rewriting of the Divine Name
One striking current in Christian Kabbalah involved transformations of the Tetragrammaton, the four-letter Hebrew divine name YHWH, into a five-letter form associated by Christian Kabbalists with Jesus. This “Pentagrammaton” symbolism appears in early modern occult contexts and became especially influential in later ceremonial magic.
Its importance is not that it reveals a secret consensus inside Jewish Kabbalah. It is a Christian theological construction using Hebrew linguistic material. That distinction is essential. The symbolism demonstrates how Renaissance Christians could treat Hebrew as simultaneously ancient, sacred, and available for reinterpretation within a Christological scheme.
When the Magical Calendar places Hebrew-derived symbols beside Christian theology, planetary tables, and alchemical ideas, it makes visible a broader Renaissance ambition: different traditions are being arranged as if they are fragments of one primordial wisdom. Historians can study the cultural power of that ambition while also noting the asymmetry involved when Christian scholars appropriated Jewish learning for Christian proof.
The Arbatel and the Olympic Spirits
The Arbatel de magia veterum, printed at Basel in 1575 and preserved in a public-domain digitization by the University Library of Basel, is another important predecessor. It is a short Latin work famous today for its seven “Olympic spirits,” figures associated with the planetary sphere and a vision of magic framed as pious wisdom rather than sensational demonology.
Specialist comparison of the Magical Calendar with earlier texts has long noted material from the Arbatel. The connection makes historical sense. Both works inhabit a Christianized learned-magical environment that treats the seven planetary powers as part of a structured cosmos. Yet the genres differ. The Arbatel presents aphoristic teaching in a small book; the Calendarium integrates names, symbols, and correspondences into a graphic encyclopedia.
The “Olympic spirits” later became some of the most recognizable entities in Western occultism, especially because their names and sigils were repeatedly reproduced. Their presence within a broader table is a reminder that sigils rarely float free of intellectual context in early sources. They belong to systems linking planets, divine providence, moral discipline, cosmic administration, and human aspirations.
Claims that such entities can objectively be contacted or compelled by ritual are religious or esoteric claims, not scientifically verified facts. Historically, however, their transmission is demonstrable. We can follow names and symbols from one print environment to another and observe how later readers detached, rearranged, or expanded them.
Angels, Spirits, and the Bureaucratic Imagination of the Cosmos
The Magical Calendar participates in a much wider tendency to imagine the invisible world as ordered. Angels have ranks; planets have intelligences or spirits; zodiacal regions have rulers; divine names occupy hierarchies. This is sometimes described as a “bureaucratic” cosmos because invisible powers are arranged almost like offices in an administration.
The comparison is useful if not pushed too literally. Early modern European societies were deeply hierarchical, and Christian angelology already possessed elaborate ranks inherited from late antique and medieval authorities. Astrology contributed planetary governors. Ritual magic added operational lists of names. Kabbalistic and pseudo-Kabbalistic traditions supplied additional linguistic structures. The chart gathers these strands into a visual hierarchy.
Such organization performed an intellectual function. A chaotic universe filled with arbitrary spirits would be difficult to study. A ranked universe can be catalogued. The chart turns metaphysical beings into entries in a system, giving the viewer the impression that the unseen world is as structured as the visible one.
This should not be mistaken for empirical verification. A table can organize beliefs without proving the beings it lists. For historians, the table is evidence of classification, transmission, and religious imagination.
Ritual Time and the Heptameron Tradition
Another family of early magical texts organized ritual around days, hours, planets, angels, directions, seasons, and names. The work commonly known as the Heptameron, traditionally attributed to Pietro d’Abano but generally treated by modern scholarship as pseudonymous, became a particularly influential example. It arranges ritual conditions according to planetary and temporal correspondences.
The exact relationship between every element of the Magical Calendar and the Heptameron should not be overstated without line-by-line textual comparison. More important is the shared intellectual habit. Both systems assume that time is qualitatively differentiated. Monday and Saturday are not merely labels for positions in a seven-day cycle; they can be understood as lunar and Saturnian environments carrying distinct celestial associations.
This idea of “qualified time” contrasts with the modern tendency to treat time as homogeneous units measured by clocks. In astrological magic, the moment of an action could be part of the action’s meaning. A ritual image, prayer, medicine, or talisman was sometimes considered properly configured only when terrestrial materials and celestial timing corresponded.
Modern astronomy does not establish that planetary hours produce the magical effects claimed in historical ritual sources. Yet the historical system is internally intelligible: a cosmos of sympathies naturally generates a theory in which the right time matters because celestial conditions are part of the chain of correspondence.
Alchemy: Not Just Gold, but a Philosophy of Transformation
The Magical Calendar belongs to an alchemical print world, and Goethe University Frankfurt explicitly places it among the natural-magical and alchemical publications associated with the de Bry circle. Alchemy in this context should not be reduced to fraudulent gold-making or treated as a modern psychological metaphor projected backward. Early modern alchemy encompassed laboratory practices, theories of matter, medicine, metallurgy, religious symbolism, artisanal knowledge, and speculative cosmology in varying combinations.
The chart’s references to the philosophers’ stone and quinta essentia participate in this broader field. The quintessence, or “fifth essence,” could signify a purified substance beyond the four ordinary elements in different natural-philosophical and alchemical theories. The philosophers’ stone functioned as an imagined agent of perfection and transformation in many alchemical traditions.
By placing alchemical concepts beside theology and number, the Calendarium suggests that material transformation mirrors larger cosmic principles. That analogy is historically central. If nature is one interconnected system, then a change in the laboratory may be interpreted as a small-scale expression of universal processes.
The chart does not therefore separate “spiritual alchemy” and “chemical alchemy” as neatly as many modern popular accounts do. Its world permits religious, material, celestial, and symbolic meanings to overlap. Careful reading should preserve that early modern complexity rather than forcing every alchemical image into either modern chemistry or personal psychology.
Pseudo-Paracelsian Material and the Problem of Famous Names
Early modern magical culture often circulated texts under prestigious names. Paracelsus became one of the most powerful of those names, and works attributed to him could carry authority even when modern scholarship does not accept the attribution. A medical-historical study indexed by PubMed notes that the Archidoxis magica is among works wrongly attributed to Paracelsus.
This matters because magical seals and medical-magical ideas associated with “Paracelsus” entered later compilations. When comparing the Magical Calendar with Paracelsian material, it is therefore safer to speak of Paracelsian or pseudo-Paracelsian traditions unless a particular text’s authorship is secure.
The distinction between authentic authorship and pseudonymous transmission is not pedantry. Attribution shapes historical interpretation. If a seventeenth-century compiler believed a text was by Paracelsus, that belief affected the text’s authority even if a modern historian later demonstrates otherwise. We need two sentences where older occult histories often used one: “This material circulated under the name of Paracelsus,” and “modern scholarship does not necessarily accept that authorship.”
The Magical Calendar is full of precisely this kind of layered authority. Biblical names, ancient philosophers, astronomers, Renaissance occultists, and magical authors appear within a network whose prestige depends partly on genealogy. The artifact therefore teaches not only correspondence but also how traditions construct legitimacy through names.
Why the Giant Broadside Format Matters
A huge engraved chart does something a normal book cannot. A codex is sequential: one page follows another. A broadside can be synoptic: many categories become visible simultaneously. The viewer’s eye may travel sideways, upward, downward, or diagonally. The medium encourages comparison.
This is crucial for correspondence-based knowledge. If the intellectual goal is to show that seven planets align with seven metals, seven days, seven types of spirit, and other sevenfold lists, then a table is more efficient than paragraphs. If twelve zodiac signs correspond to twelve months and further twelves, a single row can make the relation immediate.
The Frankfurt exhibition emphasizes the role of Merian’s images as aids to orientation and knowledge transmission. Small scenes do more than decorate the data. They provide narrative anchors. A viewer confronted by hundreds of names and signs can use figures associated with planets, elements, or mythic stories as visual entry points.
This makes the Calendarium an early modern example of information visualization. The phrase is modern, but the function is recognizable. The design converts textual complexity into spatial organization. It treats the page as a map whose geography is conceptual rather than terrestrial.
Merian’s Images: When Art Becomes an Argument
Matthäus Merian the Elder was extraordinarily skilled at creating images that made abstract systems memorable. In the Magical Calendar, pictorial episodes interrupt and animate the columns of text. Frankfurt’s exhibition draws attention to the planetary “children”—human figures and activities imagined under particular planetary influences—and to scenes in which mythological and alchemical meanings overlap.
The Moon, for example, is represented through an elaborate nocturnal image containing water, celestial light, and narrative elements. Mercury appears in a scene connected with measurement, arts, instruments, and learned activity. Such pictures transform lists of correspondences into miniature worlds.
Images can also naturalize a theory. A list that says Mercury corresponds to certain arts is visibly a proposition. A richly drawn scene showing Mercurial occupations can make that proposition feel like an observed social reality. The visual rhetoric therefore reinforces the taxonomy.
At the same time, art opens interpretive space. A symbol may support more than one reading. Myth, craft, science, theology, and alchemy can coexist in a single scene. That density is one reason the Calendarium remains compelling even after its astrological and magical premises have lost the status they possessed for historical believers.
How to Read the Magical Calendar Without Turning It into a Spell Sheet
Modern occult websites sometimes extract a sigil, a divine name, or a planetary table from the Calendarium and present it as a ready-made ritual technology. That use is part of the object’s modern reception, but it can obscure what the historical artifact actually is. The sheet is a system, not merely a warehouse of isolated seals.
A source-first reading begins with structure. Identify the row number. Ask why its contents share that number. Observe how theological, natural, celestial, and ritual categories are placed beside one another. Then compare the entries with earlier sources such as Agrippa or the Arbatel. This reveals where Großschedel inherited material and where the chart’s graphic arrangement creates new relationships.
Next, distinguish descriptive history from practice. A historian can explain that a seal was associated with Saturn without claiming that the seal causes Saturnian effects. One can document that an angelic name was used in ritual literature without asserting that the entity objectively exists. One can analyze the symbolism of the philosophers’ stone without promising material transmutation.
